India’s criminal justice system has undergone a landmark transformation with the passing of three new criminal laws in December 2023. These laws officially came into effect on July 1, 2024, replacing colonial-era legislations that had been in force for over a century. This reform represents more than a statutory change—it is a modernization of the criminal justice system to make it more citizen-friendly, transparent, and efficient. Provisions for digital filing of FIRs, stronger victim protection rights, forensic requirements in serious offences, and community service as an alternative punishment reflect the emphasis on timely and accessible justice.
