Upcoming AIBE Exam (AIBE-XX – 2025)
The All India Bar Examination (AIBE-XX), conducted by the Bar Council of India (BCI), is scheduled to be held in December 2025 in offline (pen-and-paper) mode. The official notification is expected around August–September 2025, with online registration likely to open in September and close by October. Admit cards are expected in November, followed by the exam in December. The AIBE is a qualifying exam, and candidates who pass are awarded the Certificate of Practice (CoP), which is mandatory for practicing law in India.

The AIBE was first introduced in 2011 by the Bar Council of India to ensure that newly enrolled advocates possess the minimum professional competence required to practice law. Since its inception, the exam has undergone several changes, including updates in exam pattern, syllabus, and rules about study material. Originally conducted as an open-book examination, recent editions have restricted candidates to carrying only Bare Acts without notes or comments, making it more rigorous and reflective of real-life practice.

The necessity of the AIBE was reinforced by the Supreme Court of India in the case of Bar Council of India vs. Bonnie Foi Law College (2012), where the Court upheld the authority of the Bar Council to prescribe preconditions for granting advocates the right to practice. Later, in V. Sudeer vs. Bar Council of India (1999), the Court had earlier curtailed BCI’s powers regarding training and examinations, but subsequent judgments clarified that the BCI could indeed conduct a competency test to maintain professional standards. This legal backing has firmly established the AIBE as a benchmark for entry into the legal profession.
