FAQ ON REGISTRATION FOR AIBE- 2025 (ALL INDIA BAR EXAMINATION)
1. WHAT IS THE AIBE AND WHY IS IT IMPORTANT? Answer:The All India Bar Examination (AIBE) is conducted by the Bar Council of India (BCI) to test the ability of law graduates to practice law in India. Passing the AIBE earns you a Certificate of Practice, allowing you to appear before courts across India as an advocate. Example:If you complete your LL.B. and pass the AIBE, you can officially represent clients in court. Without passing AIBE, you cannot legally practice law even if you hold a law degree. If enrolled with a State Bar Council, the time limit to clear the AIBE (All India Bar Examination) is currently three years from the date of provisional enrolment; failure to do so means one cannot practice law until the exam is cleared. 2. WHO IS ELIGIBLE TO REGISTER FOR AIBE AS PER THE NEW NOTIFICATION (DATED 27.09.2025)? The notification allows the following candidates to register: (a) Final-year, final-semester law students (without backlogs): You can apply if you are in your last semester of LL.B. (3-year or 5-year course) and have no pending backlogs. Example:Riya is in her 5th year (10th semester) of a 5-year B.A. LL.B. course and has cleared all previous semesters. She is eligible to register for AIBE. (b) Law graduates who have completed the course but not yet received their degree: You can apply if you have finished all exams but are waiting for your degree certificate from the university. Example: Arjun finished his 3-year LL.B. in June 2025 but his convocation is scheduled for December 2025. He can still register for AIBE. c) Law graduates who have obtained their degree but not enrolled with any State Bar Council, or have surrendered their enrolment: Even if you have your degree but haven’t yet enrolled (or have surrendered your enrolment), you can register. Example: Sneha got her LL.B. degree in 2023 but didn’t enroll because she took a corporate job. She can still register for AIBE. 3. WHO IS NOT ELIGIBLE TO APPEAR FOR AIBE? Answer:Candidates studying in or graduated from non-recognised or non-approved colleges/universities by the Bar Council of India (BCI) are not eligible. Example: If a student completed LL.B. from a university not approved by BCI, even with a degree, they cannot register for AIBE. 4. WHAT DOCUMENTS ARE REQUIRED DURING REGISTRATION? Answer:You must upload self-attested and scanned copies (not photos taken from a mobile) of the following: For Final-Year Students: Marksheets from Semester I to V (for 3-year LL.B.) & Marksheets from Semester I to IX (for 5-year LL.B.) For Graduates Awaiting Degree: Marksheets from Semester I to VI (for 3-year LL.B.) & Marksheets from Semester I to X (for 5-year LL.B.) Example: Ravi, a final-year 3-year LL.B. student, must upload his first five semester marksheets (I–V). 5. WHAT IS THE UNDERTAKING THAT MUST BE SUBMITTED? Answer:The undertaking is a self-declaration that confirms your eligibility category and that all information you provide is true. It must include: I. Your personal details (name, address, etc.) II. Declaration of your eligibility category (final-year student, awaiting degree, etc.) III. Confirmation that your institution is BCI-recognised IV. Agreement to follow all BCI rules and regulations Example: Meera, a final-semester student, will fill in the undertaking mentioning: “I am a final-year, final-semester law student with no backlogs from previous semesters. I am studying at a BCI-recognised college affiliated with a BCI-recognised university. 6. When can eligible candidates start registration for AIBE-XX? Answer: According to the notification, registration begins from 29.09.2025 until 28.10.2025. 7. WHAT HAPPENS IF A CANDIDATE PROVIDES FALSE INFORMATION OR INCOMPLETE DETAILS? Answer:Providing false information or hiding facts (like backlogs or unrecognised university) may lead to: I. Disqualification from AIBE, and/or II. Withdrawal of eligibility for enrolment with any State Bar Council. Example:If a student hides that they have a backlog in one semester, their registration may be cancelled later when verified. 8. WHAT IF A CANDIDATE IS WORKING AND NOT CURRENTLY ENROLLED WITH A BAR COUNCIL? Answer:Such candidates can apply, but if they pass the AIBE, they will be eligible for enrolment only for six months. After that, if they are not actively practicing, they must reappear for AIBE to continue eligibility. Example: Aditya, a lawyer working in a corporate firm, appears for AIBE and passes. He gets a six-month window to enroll. If he doesn’t enroll within that period, he must take AIBE again before starting legal practice later. 9. HOW CAN A STUDENT CONFIRM IF THEIR COLLEGE/UNIVERSITY IS RECOGNISED BY THE BAR COUNCIL OF INDIA (BCI)? Answer:You can check the list of BCI-recognised colleges/universities on the official Bar Council of India website (https://www.barcouncilofindia.org/). Always confirm before applying for AIBE. Example: Before applying, Priya checks the BCI website and finds her university listed under “Approved Institutions.” She can safely proceed with registration. 10. WHY HAS THIS CHANGE BEEN MADE? Answer:This update follows the directions of the Hon’ble Supreme Court and the Bar Council of India’s revised rules. It allows final-year students without backlogs and certain categories of graduates to take AIBE earlier — speeding up their entry into the profession. Example: Earlier, only graduates enrolled with a State Bar Council could take AIBE. Now, final-semester students can register too, saving them several months. CONCLUSION: This notification provides a flexible opportunity for final-year law students and unregistered graduates to take the AIBE sooner.Make sure your college is BCI-approved, submit accurate documents, and complete the undertaking honestly to ensure a smooth registration process.
